Corps of Engineers to dredge section of Upper Chesapeake BayProject Updates // February 17, 2017
The US Army Corps of Engineers’ Philadelphia District will begin maintenance dredging a section of the Upper Chesapeake Bay in late February of 2017. Work is expected to be completed by the end of March 2017.
The project area extends from the Sassafras River to Fairlee Creek. Dredged material will be beneficially reused at the Paul S Sarbanes Ecosystem Restoration Project at Poplar Island located on the eastern side of the Chesapeake Bay.
Great Lakes Dredge & Dock Company has been awarded a US$5.8 million contract for dredging of the shipping channel.
The project is part of the Inland Waterway Delaware River to Chesapeake Bay Project, which helps ensure safe and reliable maritime commerce from the Delaware Bay to the Chesapeake.
